There is often much excitement associated with the idea of receiving new, permanent teeth. However, before you can begin to enjoy the benefits of a complete smile, you must first undergo several steps, one of which is dental implant surgery. If you’re feeling apprehensive about treatment or unsure about the procedure, here are 3 things you can do to prepare for the day you’ll receive your new and improved set of teeth.
Make Sure to Plan Ahead
There are a few things you’ll want to make sure that you take care of and address before the day of your surgery. These include:
- Having a family member or friend who can drive you to and from your appointment.
- Having the appropriate groceries in your pantry and refrigerator beforehand so that you don’t have to do any shopping for soft foods after your procedure.
- Having someone pick up any prescription medication for you so that you have it ready as the anesthesia begins to wear off.
Make Sure to Eat a Healthy Breakfast the Morning of Your Procedure
If you do not plan to receive any form of sedation but only anesthesia, make sure to eat a hearty and healthy breakfast before your appointment. This will ensure you remain full and do not feel tempted to eat immediately following your procedure.
Eating anything while numb is not a good idea because you could accidentally bite down on your tongue, lips, or cheeks and cause damage.
If you do plan to receive any type of sedation, do not eat anything beforehand, as this can cause you to become sick. Instead, wait until you return home, and the anesthesia wears off, to consume some type of soft food.
Make Sure Your Calendar is Clear
Do not plan anything after your dental implant surgery. You will need to return home and rest for the remainder of the day. The anesthesia and sedation (if required) will take time to wear off, so the only thing you need to do is rest.
Attempting any kind of activity following your appointment can lead to increased bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. Also, if you receive sedation, you will be unable to drive, so give yourself the day off and spend it in bed or on the couch allowing your mouth to begin the healing process.
The day of your dental implant surgery can be exciting and a bit nerve-wracking; however, by following these tips to be better prepared, you’ll move through the process with ease and be on your way to a healthier, complete, and fully restored smile.
