Learning everything there is to know about children’s dental health is impossible. As your child grows, their smile will change, and it’s important that you know what to expect. To help you in your pursuit of knowledge, here are 4 facts you won’t want to miss.

It’s Important to Take Care of Your Child’s Baby Teeth

Many parents assume there is no need to pay close attention to baby teeth, as they eventually fall out. Unfortunately, this approach leads to dental decay and cavities at an early age, which can impact permanent teeth when they try to erupt.

As soon as you see your child’s first tooth erupt, begin brushing it with the appropriate dental instruments and instructions (i.e., a small toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste).

Sugar Isn’t the Only Thing That Causes Cavities

There are many reasons why cavities form, so you cannot place the sole blame on sugar consumption. You should also be mindful of starches in their diet, as these can also cause dental decay.

Other reasons for cavities include poor oral hygiene, missed dental appointments, etc.

Children Need to See a Dentist at an Early Age

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time by the time they reach the age of one or as soon as their first tooth erupts. This sets the tone for future visits, as it allows the dentist to get to know you and your little one. It also exposes your child to the sights and sounds of the office and helps them learn that these visits are not meant to be scary.

Bringing them in for an initial visit can make early oral hygiene habits easier to incorporate, which will increase the chances of better dental care in the future.

Mothers Can Pass Cavities Onto Their Children

Nearly 71% of cases involving tooth decay are the result of bacteria being transferred from a mother to her baby. This is because there is a strain of bacteria that easily passes through saliva – Streptococcus mutans.

When testing food for its temperature to make sure it’s not hot, blowing on food to cool it down, sharing utensils, and giving kisses, saliva can be passed indirectly, resulting in cavities.

There are many additional facts that are worth learning about when it comes to your child’s dental health, so if you want to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist.
